St. Paul speaks of marriage, where man and woman become one flesh, in reference to Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:31-32). The love that Christ has for his Church is represented in the faithful, fruitful, free, and total love between two baptized spouses. The free consent of the couple in the presence of the Church’s minister and two witnesses binds the couple together until the death of one of the spouses. God seals their union and “what God has joined together no human being must separate” (Matthew 19:3-6). Once the consent exchanged between a baptized man and a baptized woman is consummated, the marriage is absolutely indissoluble. The indissolubility of marriage protects the two purposes of marriage, which are the good of the couple and the generation and education of children.
