Q. What is the fundamental difference that the existence of God, and His self-Revelation, makes in our human life.
A. God is the source of all life. God is the source of existence and God’s existence gives our human life and all creation both an origin and destination. As we read at the end of the book of the Apocalypse, ” I am the Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end.” Why any thing exists is not a physical question that can be answered by the natural sciences but a metaphysical question which can not be dismissed or easy answered. While some atheists want us to believe that science disproves God’s existence the fact of the matter is that by definition it can not, as God is not a type of material or of energy, He is by definition not part of the world, and so the science which observes the natural world can’t say anything about Him directly but only make observations about His creation. Thus to believe in God, or to disbelieve in him, or even to be indifferent is a statement of faith. Its up to us to believe or not to believe in God, but because He has revealed Himself to us, if we choose to believe at the natural level in God, at the supernatural level our hearts are open to a whole new reality beyond the limits of our Human potential.
Fundamentally the difference God makes in our life is this: if God doesn’t exists then there is no reason for creation. Ok, so whats the big deal if this was true? Well if there is no reason for creation then a) the is no reason for any moral or legal justification other than force–might makes right; b) if there is no reason for creation then why should we believe that we or anyone else exists; c) finally if there is no reason for existence there is no point for living, there is no reason to have children, no reason to endure suffering, no reason for working hard, etc. As John Paul Satre, the atheist Existentialist once noted, “hell is other people.” In truth, this world might as well be hell.
God’s existence gives human life the direction that it seeks and the possibility of contentment, the happiness, it longs for.
